Using theme based units, your child will experience a variety of literature that includes fiction and nonfiction pieces. Through book clubs, students will learn self selection skills and how to read for enjoyment.
The writing process will teach students how to write the following styles; persuasive, compare/contrast, real narrative, imagined narrative, explanatory, and informational using the Write Tools Strategies.
Your child will learn and apply both the lower and upper case alphabet in cursive manuscript.
The math curriculum will proceed through the following topics; numeration, number sense: addition and subtraction, using place value to add and subtract, meaning of multiplication, multiplication facts: using patterns, multiplication facts: use known facts, meanings of division, division facts, understanding fractions, fraction comparison and equivalence, two dimensional shapes and their attributes, time, perimeter, area, liquid volume and mass, and data. Basic math facts will be stressed with an emphasis on multiplication.
Geography skills are taught using five themes, maps, and globes. Bringing History Home curriculum will be implemented through Cedar Rapids History, Industrial Revolution, and Slavery and Segregation.
Your child will explore science concepts through observations, investigations, and collection of data. The units include:
- Properties of Water
- Physics of Sound
- Structures of Life
Your child will learn and use basic keyboarding skills. Several software programs that integrate the curriculum will be used.
